I have one of those, I paid some odd 25 bucks for it. Not sure what I intended to do with it...

That is a Pflueger model 1558. (I have one just like it) According to Pflueger, it IS a fly reel.

With two wood knob handles, there's no way it's a fly reel. 1558 Sal trout came with only one handle.

Sal-Trout 1558 came with one or two handles. I have a two handle version now, my single handle was ripped off a year ago.

One or two knobs on the spool, Phflueger says it is a fly reel. The manufacturer should know what they designed, built, marketed, and sold, right? The 1558 is a 12 wt reel that holds a lot of 30 pound test backing.

Yes, some people did use them for wire line trolling, but that is not what it was designed for.

Yep. On a 12 wt Shakespeare Ugly Stick I bought a couple years ago from a fellow SOL'r (SOL'er? What is the proper spelling on that?)

I also have the 1554 Sal-Trout 5/6 wt size on a 1930's or 40's "All American" fiberglass fly rod.

I'm hoping one of these days to learn how to cast "properly" when fly fishing. In the mean time, I'll just cast "wrong" 99.9997% of the time. At least I'm not catching a tree bass anymore (most of the time ... ok ... 25% of the time) when I cast.

Not to beat this dead horse because - does it really matter but if you do your research through old catalogs or magazines or any collector books or just go on Ebay and see what lots of people say you should come to the same conclusion - that is to some degree everybody is right in one way or another. The Sal trout series of reels are " fly " reels. That is they are single action like most all fly reels. The 1554 is a smaller reel and designed for fly fishing. But the 1558 was designed as a deep water trolling reel for such fish as Lake Trout. Lead core or copper/wire line trolling to go deep. Putting this reel on a rod and fly fishing with it is well lets say a stretch. You might as well use a Penn Senator.

Early 1558 used a double wooden knob handle - later ones used a single plastic knob

My information comes mainly from a box insert for the Pflueger Sal Trout reel, old catalogs, and collector books.

PS - it is still only worth about $20.
