Default Lamiglass Question?

I'm new to the world of saltwater fishing. Looking to have a rod made for a Penn 706 reel I just got. Will be used on a pier mostly. Found some lamiglass blanks in a store that are about 15 to 18 years old. They are yellow in color, and about 10' long. How would I go about determining what they are rated for. And if they are any good. Thanks in advance for any help!!

You can take some caliper readings of the tip and butt diameters and reask here or call lamiglass. Or take the blanks out and false cast them keeping in mind your needs and wants out of the rod and style of fishing via playing around and flexing them. Further test by tapeing on a reel and some guides and go casting or fishing, then determine and adjust from there. Let other expierienced fisherman give em a whirl too they'll let you know.

Those older yellow blanks sometimes had the model number etched into them with a vibrating pen down at the butt. If there are any numbers and letters down there you can probably look them up on the Lami site or call and ask. Sometimes they were also written on witha magic marker and I've even seen some with a model number written on them and then the a gloss coat applied over the lettering.

Those were very durable blanks and should be cheap enough to be worth giving them a try. They do bend a lot compared to graphite rods because the fibers are I believe e glass , a fairly low modulus fiber.

Believe it or not , back in the 70's people on the beach used to tell beginners to look for the guys fishing those yellow blanks because they were usually very knowledgeable striper fisherman because those were considered high end blanks. . Spags in Worcester used to sell them cheap and guys would use black tape to secure the big wire guides on them. I'm fairly sure that the Penn Zstyle and particularly the 704 and 706 were sone of the more popular reels to use on them even that long ago.

I know there is no perfect answer, So do you think this would be a good start for a pier rod to throw cigar minnows and catch kings on. Thanks

I think it would be. You could also tape the guides on and try it and if you want more power you could trim the tip an inch and try again etc. This is assuming the price is right on these old blanks (pretty low)
