It depends on who you ask. Read the sticky post on the topic and you can decide for yourself.
Me? I grease all carbon washers with cals or shimano drag grease. |

Penn does not recommend lubing drag washers. I have always lubed drag washers! If for no other reason than to keep water out! Don't go crazy just a real light film of a good quality waterproof grease. I use a product from a well known northern surfcasting shop that was developed for underwater drill bits!

I have talked to good fishermen who do, I have talked to good fishermen who don't. I haven't tried greasing the drag on my 704z yet, but I will give it a shot when I find the right grease and see how I like it.
One thing I know for sure is that after a couple of days of hard fishing an amazing amount of saltwater crud can build up in the drag stack. Regular cleaning, like after any trip where the reel gets dunked, makes a big difference.

First make sure you have the " carbon" type drags . The penn carbon drags are # HT100 look at alans post and you will see what the "carbon" type drags look like so that you can see if "you" have them installed. You cant tell the difference between the penn carbon type drags or the smoothie brand by just looking at them ( maybe allan can) either way if you dont have carbon drag washers installed then it is a non issue.
The reason why the drags are greased is so lend a "smoothness" to the drag system and if in the event there is slight water intrusion in to the drag system, the grease allows the drag washes to give line out in a smooth way rather than a hurky jerky payout, therby possibly causing your line to "pop" If you have the carbon style drag washers and you are gonna grease 'em read alans most excellent post, with pictures. Use the cals grease or the shimano whichever is available in a pinch you can use teflon spray. The line roller is another issue, too much aggravation, old technology thats why I now keep my uncles refurbished 710 on a shelf, I'll use it once and in a while for nostalgic reasons. Call scotts bait and tackle in mystic nj hell tell Ya what to do, or do a search this has been discussed. PS ALAN THANKS for the avet info, great forum serviced mine this past wkend for the first time, my drag washer is glued in not bad per sey but I hope they did a good glue job, and I still greased the drag as recomended. What an easy teardown, I thought the Newells were easy.

Felt and other fabric washers seem to last longer and work better when greased. But this can be argued. Quote:
I would be worried about what is going on behind the disc that you just can't see and put a good amount of grease behind. Dremel? New Spool just for a drag disc? Frig that.

Re: Glueing the avet drags on the newer models *** ? If you know someone who is a machinist they can probly surgically cut it out ? I dont use mine in the surf so really a non issue for me but other folks who use the reel in the surf.
