I have a 2001 Ford Explorer 4 door xlt. When I got this vehicle a few years ago I was given 2 coded keys to start the car but that's all. I either get in by the keypad on the door or with the remote.
I realized that if my battery goes dead for some reason that I have no way to get into the car because the door locks need the power to open and the keys I have open none of the doors. Can I go to a Ford dealership with my registration and have them make me an entry key with the vin number or am I going to have to remove one of the locks and have a locksmith make me up a key to get in?

There's a locksmith in Setauket that makes chip keys. I can't think of the name but there on 347.

I don't need the chip key just an entry key. I have 2 of the chip keys to start the car I need the key to open the doors not using the remote.

Interesting dilemma.
I had a 99 Expy with the key pad and chip keys. The chip keys opened the doors, yours don't? That sux. I loved that keypad when fishing. Have a Toyota now and must carry the key in my waders. Good luck.

Andy -
On my '07 the locksmith made a spare un-chipped ('fishing') key good for the door lock only. However it'll scramble the ignition if used. I don't have a keypad on the truck's door. Hooky ![]()

I have a chip key for my Jeep GC. If you use it to open the doors it will set off the alarm. You need to use the remote.
I did have a non chip key made at the dealership that will get me in if I lock my keys inside. |

So if I understand correctly the ignition key does NOT unlock the door?
If that's the case either the ignition cylinder or the door cylinder was probably changed to a randomly coded cylinder. I would have the dealer cut you a key (NON CHIPPED) from the VIN and see which it operates. The one that it does not has been changed. Once you find which cylinder has been changed take it to the dealer or a locksmith and have them code the cylinders the same. Odds are if the ignition cylinder has been changed it may have been a theft recovery, if the door cylinder is different the keys may have been lost and they were worried about the car being stolen so the had it coded differently, thus preventing them from disabling the alarm, yet they still had acess with the keypad or remote. |

If your alarm goes off even if you unlock the door there is a problem. There is a micro switch on the back of the lock cylinder that only senses rotation to disarm the alarm not weather or not you have a chip in the key. More than likely you have an aftermarket alarm that uses the unlock input from the Remote keyless entry as a deactivation signal and that's why your alarm goes off. It has nothing to do with the chip in the key. Last edited by MoparCharlie : 11-03-2009 at 04:33 PM. |

I went to the Ford dealership today and asked about the entry key. They looked up the code from the vin and cut me a couple of entry keys. The guy there told me that the ignition key would open the doors but from the locks not being used with the ket oxidation probably built up and that why they wouldn't turn. He told me to spray the crap out of the locks with wd-40 and let it soak and they will work.
I did that and the drivers and passenger door worked but not the rear. I sprayed again and I'll let it set and see what happens. At least I can get in now if my battery dies without having to break a window.

This is a little off your post but.I had a f 150 broken into they smashed the lock on drivers door.I went to a Ford dealer local and they wanted A arm and a leg to replace both locks.Said I had to buy the whole set.Local locksmith replaced the broken lock and set it to use the same key.The cost was minimal. If you do need lock work a good LS is who to see.

Open the back tailgate glass, with the regular ignition key. Over the left rear wheel well is a door lock switch. Should take very little electic power for it to work. Did it once on my 2000 eddie bauer explorer. The guy who owned the truck before me didnt even know the switch was there.
