750 ssm - First time opening it up

Hey guys,

Very new to cleaning/greasing my reel. I had it done by shops before at $15-20 each time.

Im trying to find out if I can do it myself.

I opened it up for the first time today and saw there was some liquid in it. Im guessing its saltwater.

Also, there is a mix of greenish stuff (seems like grease) and some caked on white-ish stuff.

What the hell is that?

Anybody have a video link of some sort to cleaning/greasing reels?

A photo would help a bit to see whats going on. Maybe its a combination of dried salt and a a little corrosion/galvanic action? That is my shot in the dark.

I'm with MDB. The white stuff could be salt or corrosion of the housing from the salt water. The green stuff is most likely grease as it comes in a few colors (blue, green, white, tan) depending on ones preference. As far as doing it yourself, where penns are concerned if you wipe your own butt and tie your own shoes it shouldn't be too hard! Get a schematic, take pics as you go, use a clean bright work area, keep everything organized ( I place each "assembly" in a small ziplock bag after I remove and clean it. When everything is clean (including the work area) I lube each assembly as I reinstall/reassemble it. Good luck and there is ALWAYS someone here to ask for help. This is the best bunch of guys I've never met! Better then many I have met!!!!!

Hey Soda, I guess it's all in how we were raised. In 45 yrs of fishing I have NEVER sent a reel to be serviced! My Dad always did his own and therefore it was natural I did mine. I will admit that the newer reels can be scary once opened! It makes me wonder when I open my Taurus why it takes so many more parts for it to do exactly what my penn does!!!!! And when you open your first "baitrunner" type reel your jaw may drop! In all of my reel services the most difficult obstical seems to be procuring parts! It seems some mfg build a reel for a year or 2 change it and never mfg enough parts to keep all the reels sold up and running!

Very interesting to hear. Wonder if it would be a good idea to get spare parts the same year as the reel? Of course, I would only do this is I got a really expensive reel. My new goal is to get a reel that I will keep for a decade. Im usually the type to just say: "buy a new one! That one is broken!" I will try to change that.

Yeah, its only my second season on the East Coast and is not a sport that was taught to me. My brother and I just decided to try it out one day. Wasnt long before we got addicted!
