I have an 18' center console and have been out to Stellwagen Bank many times. You really need to pick your days properly to go out there, but it is definitely doable. Obviously, the bigger you can do the better, but whenever looking into a used boat you are really buying the quality of the engine. Especially if you go out there with one engine you want to be sure that it is in tip top shape.

Good Luck

A used 19' Northcoast. They are tough to find used at any price, however, it is a no nonsense fishign boat that will go to Stewagen just fine on nice days and come home in a little bit of slop without too much discomfort.

Oh and if you do go offshore, Do what other people said and check the waves before you go out. small boat + big waves = uncomfortable, nonsafe boating.

Thats what all the mechanics say,

if I owned a ficht I'd run it,
but given the choice I wouldn't actually buy one.
They can be difficult to sell.

Then those mechanics speak the truth! Steve has run that Ficht for 500 hours. Who is to say it won't run another 1000 hours? I would be much more skeptical of a Ficht with 50 hours on it for sure.

Folks say the same thing about the HPDI 300. I have three friends with that engine and they run like a top, all with over 500 hours.

Now the Etec is another story all together. Spoke to a pro bass guy for Ranger yesterday. Said he popped 7 lower units on his etec so far! Said at the last tournament there was a BRP truck going around changing lower units! Said there had to have been 15 LU's in that truck bed by day two! Yikes!

You can get a lemon engine no matter what brand you choose. Just the chances are less on certain brands and models.

Like I said before...If that boat had a Yammie four stroke on it it wouldn't be that price. For the budget this guy has and what he wants for it steve's boat would be a good choice.
