That being said i am almost done with my 8 hr shift and i cant wait to get back out there and do it all over again. why? i think probably because if i dont go who knows what could have been. Sometimes i would rather not know what could have been.

The drive has been with me for a long time and will be for a long time.

oh yeah and its pretty effin fun!!!
Me, you & Brian (HD) need to meet up sometime.

Everytime I question going out or not I just think back how ****ing miserable I am by about January. It usually makes me snap out of it. Its hard getting up to tog before work though..really hard I think Im getting soft

i FULLY subscribe to the theory that experience is the best teacher. i went in off conditions or great conditions as often as possible. some nights were spent trying to force them to eat what and where my logs told me they should be eating and where and when. sometimes i read a report and had to chase it . the short answer is that before i left NJ for Chicago i had only been surf fishing 13 years and still felt like i had only scratched teh surface, like everytime i learned something new it left 10 new questions to answer or theorize about ultimately try and test the theory.
that and i really just like being outside at night when everyone else is asleep.

Just like when I was kid I love to catch. But I have to confess, I have the schedule and life that makes it easy. I work nights and I pass the beach on the way home. The only guy I really fish with, loves it as much, but he has to wake up in the middle of the night and get out to the beach. I triple his time while sharing equal love for it, I'm not more driven I have more an easier time gettin in to it.

They call it an addiction for a reason but honestly for me it really doesnt have to do with the fish. Sure, i "go" to catch a lunker but just being outside and setting paperwork and drama aside does it for me. Its my way of realizing im still human and that grades and reports arent all that i am. Unfortunately once the fishings done its all still there...

Default The fishing drive...

I just had this conversation with my cousin the other day...As driven as we all are doesn't make sense to the non fisherman, but we know the feeling even though the end game is a fish..A fish that we all caught before, but we can't stop...The best way I can explain it to people is on my first cast I feel like the black guy in the movie, The Green Mile when he exhales the poison from his mouth...All my worries, problems, whatever, leave me..I'm then filled with pure joy, as if your doing what you should be doing...And you are...

what is that about? where do you guys think this drive is coming from?

You're on the beach fishing, it's dark your eyes haven't adjustted yet. Your struggling to see the water, to be able to read it and figure out where you want to throw the lure to. Struggling to see any bait, anything. The first cast; don't bite it, not now, next cast please. You get a few cast in the eyes adjust and you start working the beach structure or jetty for the the spot. How are feeding, what do they want to see.
You feel that first bump, miss it, stop the lure, let sit, start it again. Boom fish on, racing heart, big smile.
That's what makes me drive to the beach, get out of the car and air down and get on the beach. Yeah it's tough at times and you don't feel like it but man it pays ya back.

Or your fishing in the dark and that first gleam of light, it gets brighter and lighter and warmer. Nothing like watching a new day come to light. I always stop for a bit and watch it, take a pic or two and smile. It's a great time.

Or your with a few guys from here, working the beach, there's a slow pick and you hook up and look over and one or two of the other guys are hooked up too. Everyone with smiles. Nothing better than that.

Or you just threw your fourth plug of the evening into the water due to a cracked guide that you have trouble finding. The guy or two with you walking to keep up with the blitz looks aout and says they sure look pretty don't they. You don't know him, he's busting yer balls but ya gotta smile and laugh because you'd make a smart azz comment to him ont he way by.
